Google: Try To Avoid Link Building

Link BuildingMore harm, than good,” said Google’s webmaster trends analyst, John Mueller on Friday morning.

This certainly is a turn around from typical SEO mandates to “work as hard at link building as at any other SEO activity.”  Just recently I sat in on a great Moz webinar, “SEO Basics: The Fundamental Signals Used to Rank Our Content” where link building was part of the overall SEO teachings.

This comment by John Mueller was captured live in a Google+ hangout, and is certainly fleeting in the context of the whole video.

We get where Google might be coming from. Google has long since been tired of contrivances that give a  website of similar quality an advantage over another. Their last few algorithm rollouts have continued to prove that what they are looking for are:

  • Socially Integrated
  • Mobile Friendly
  • Quality Fresh Content

Listen for Yourself

At the 55:40 mark of the video a webmaster asks, “is link building in any way good?” John’s initial response was, “in general, I’d try to avoid that.

What do you think about this?
